"The Creator has given us the responsibility to protect the lands on which we were placed. We are to take care of and nurture everything that the Creator has given as a trust and duty to future generations of Pikangikum people.” - From Pikangikum People Sustaining Our Livelihood on the Land

Introduction

At this time, the Whitefeather Forest Initiative involves undertaking planning tasks (Community-Based Land Use Planning) necessary for Pikangikum First Nation to acquire forest management tenure and to develop forestry and protected areas opportunities within the Whitefeather Forest Planning Area.

At the center of our vision is our total and unwavering commitment to achieve economic self-sufficiency supported by our land management expertise.

For this reason, we are also developing a land use strategy and new skills so that we can take advantage of economic opportunities related to potential forestry and protected areas within the Whitefeather Forest Planning Area.

We have now passed a critical milestone in achieving our goal – the completion and approval of a Land Use Strategy for “Keeping the Land.”
