Our Initiatives:
Emergency All Weather Road
Pikangikum First Nation is a remote access First Nation community in Northwestern Ontario. To get to our community by land requires a 30 km boat trip on the Berens River in the summer. In winter, we build our own winter road through a partnership with Noopimiing Anokeewin Inc. of Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation. Both routes connect to the Nungessor Road that reaches into our Traditional Territories from Red Lake.
Part of the summer trip between Pikangikum and the Nungessor Road involves navigating a dangerous set of rapids halfway between the community and the road. These dangerous rapids have claimed the lives of more than a dozen Pikangikum people over the years. The most recent fatal accident in 2000 led the Elders of Pikangikum to direct that an all-weather road alternative to traveling the Berens River had to be built as an urgent priority for the community.

The road has now been constructed to provide access to Taxi Bay. This has cut the boat ride to the community in half and has meant that our community members can by-pass the most dangerous rapids.
The total cost of the road will be approximately $2.5 million. Pikangikum First Nation is investing our own funds in the project and we have also received generous support from the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund. We are now seeking additional support to complete the road.
