Pikangikum First Nation recognizes that within the planning process to develop the Whitefeather Forest Initiative there are responsibilities that go beyond the local responsibilities of our community towards the Whitefeather Forest Planning Area. Provincial responsibilities regarding issues such as protected areas are being addressed in developing the Whitefeather Forest Initiative through a cooperative relationship.
We initiated the development of this cooperative relationship in 1998. At an early meeting with MNR officials our Elders stressed the importance of working together. They noted how this would build a new relationship of trust. By 1999 we had developed a cooperative Strategic Action Planning process with the MNR to take the Whitefeather Forest Initiative through its early stages.
At its heart is a consensus-building approach between Pikangikum First Nation and MNR that focuses on the Whitefeather Forest Initiative as a community economic renewal initiative of our First Nation. Every issue that has arisen in the early stages of developing the Whitefeather Forest Initiative has been resolved through consensus.
The joint Strategic Action Planning cooperative relationship that was used in the early stages of developing the initiative has been now extended into our Pikangikum-led Community-Based Land Use Planning process. We are confident of future successful cooperation with MNR.
