Other First Nations
Pikangikum First Nation recognizes that neighbouring First Nations have interests in planning related to the Whitefeather Forest Initiative. We also know that there are great opportunities open to us through working together, and we are already developing joint initiatives to take advantage of this potential while respecting each other.
As an example, we have been meeting with our western First Nation neighbours and we have signed a Protected Areas Accord with Bloodvein, Poplar River First Nation, Pauingassi First Nation and Little Grand Rapids First Nation. Through our Accord we have agreed to work together to develop a linked network of protected areas where each of our communities will take the lead role in our respective territories. We are seeking a World Heritage designation for our network in cooperation with Ontario and Manitoba.
An important business value of the Whitefeather Forest Initiative is to cooperate regionally to achieve objectives such as optimizing regional wood flows for the best economic return based on highest value and best end use. Our Elders and our leaders believe that working together with the regional industry will make the regional economy stronger. This in turn will benefit the Whitefeather Forest Initiative. For this reason Pikangikum has been involved in various regional forestry opportunity dialogue contexts. Most recently, Pikangikum has developed a value-added business partnership strategy and agreement with Wabigoon Lake Ojibway Nation (WLON). This will support the development of value-added wood manufacturing opportunities in Northwestern Ontario.
In all of our relationships with other First Nations, we respect traditional First Nation responsibilities for local resource stewardship and enterprise development. Our support for First Nations to lead their own economic initiatives in their Traditional Territories is unconditional.
